Girls tennis: Martha's Vineyard repeats as sectional champs
MATTAPOISETT – The second-seeded Martha’s Vineyard girls tennis team dropped just its first game of the South Sectional but still prevailed over the Foxboro Warriors, 4-1, in the Div. 2 South finals at Old Rochester Regional High School on Thursday afternoon.
The win was the third for the Vineyard over Foxboro this season and the second straight South Sectional title, after the Vineyard won the Div. 3 South final en route to the Div. 3 State championship last year. The Vineyard did not drop a game during its championship run a year ago.
Martha’s Vineyard (19-0) has one more match to clinch the Eastern Mass. Div. 2 State title this year, as it will take on North champion Winchester (20-0) at 2:30 p.m Tuesday at St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury. The Sachems, the top seed in Div. 2 North, advanced to the Div. 2 title game with a 5-0 win over No. 3 Newburyport (19-2).
Foxboro, the No. 5 seed in Div. 2 South, finished 19-3.
Against the Warriors, the No. 1 doubles tandem of Kat Roberts and Lizzie Williams swept past Julia Muise and Sarah Prag, 6-0, 6-0 and Molly Pogue and Chesca Potter finished the doubles sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Olivia Dantona and Kendall Milander.
Victoria Scott beat Pamela Nelson, and Hannah Rabasca downed Kayla Prag at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, with identical 6-2, 6-1 scores.
Kelly Klaren fell at No. 1 singles to South Sectional runner-up Sophia Prinos, 6-3, 6-2. The match was the last to finish Thursday after the two No. 1 singles players split their two regular season matchups.
The Vineyard beat Foxboro twice during the season, 5-0 and 4-1.
