Local Soccer: Mid-Cape United edges Blues in opener

HARWICH - James Jones scored a penalty kick goal with roughly five minutes to play, helping Mid-Cape United edge the Harwich Blues, 4-3, in the season opener in Cape Cod Amateur Soccer action at Cape Tech on Wednesday.

Luke Hartigan knotted the game at 3-all for Mid-Cape early in the second half after Harwich took a 3-2 lead to the break.

Branco Junior’s second goal and a tally by Jack Huber gave the Blues a 3-2 lead at the half. Oswaldo Lopez put United ahead 2-1 midway through the first half, after Junior’s first goal tied the game for Harwich. Jeremy Logue opened scoring for Mid-Cape eight minutes in.

United got strong defensive play from Evan Botting and Hartigan, while Fabiano Madrona, Lucas Miranda, Adrian Rodriguez and Tales Coelho were all key for the Blues.

Nauset Storm 2, Hyannis United 1: Jake LaBranche scored both Storm goals, leading Nauset over Hyannis United in the season opener for both in Hyannis.

LaBranche headed home a ball from Jake Keene off a corner kick early in the second half and added his second goal with 10 minutes to play on a rocket from 22-yards out.

Rufus Adams and Tyler Packett split time in goal for the Storm, which got strong play in the midfield from Andrew Stevens and Nate Cardeiro.

Sandwich Knights 1, Wellfleet Breakers 0: The Knights headed home a goal off a direct kick early in the second half, blanking the Breakers in the team’s season in Wellfleet.

The sides were tied 0-0 at halftime.

Jack Avellar had 12 saves and Jim Quigley and Eric Newton were strong at center back for Wellfleet.
