My great-grandfather took his own horses and walked from Kansas to Iowa so that he could fight for the Union in the Civil War. He joined the Third Iowa Cavalry. I believe he did that so that all of us would be free and equal.

Recently I saw on the news that if you live in Dodge City, Kansas, and you are poor and perhaps dark-skinned, they have made it next to impossible for you to vote. The single polling place that serves Dodge City has been moved way out of town and a mile from the nearest bus stop.

This is what I wish for those unbearable bigots and “Trumpites”: I hope they will be haunted by the thousands of Civil War heroes like my great-grandfather who were maimed and who died fighting to prevent the likes of what is happening in Dodge City today.
