BOSTON – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has issued a travel advisory for off-Cape travelers headed to today’s wake and Wednesday’s funeral for fallen Yarmouth police K-9 Officer Sean Gannon.

To minimize construction-related delays traveling to Cape Cod, state transportation officials are suggesting vehicular traffic cross the Bourne Bridge and use Sandwich Road, which runs along the canal on the Cape side, to access Route 6 eastbound.

The Sagamore Bridge currently has only one lane of traffic open in each direction due to an ongoing maintenance construction project being done by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

In a media advisory issued Tuesday afternoon, the agency included photographs of the bridge work taken earlier in the day showing crater-like openings in the center of the span, in effect ruling out any possibility that all four lanes of the bridge could be opened temporarily to accommodate the expected extra traffic.

The Department of Transportation and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority also announced the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge in Boston, the Kenneth F. Burns Bridge in Worcester, South Station and the Government Center T station will be lit blue tonight in Gannon's honor.
