BARNSTABLE — A search was launched Thursday afternoon for a fishing boat that issued a mayday call from an area north of Barnstable Harbor but by nightfall it had still not been located.

The Michelle Marie issued a mayday call at 2:38 p.m., according to U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Andrew Barresi.

Crew said the boat was taking on water and that four people were on board, said Barresi. The mayday call was the last that the Coast Guard had any communication with the vessel, he said.

The Barnstable harbormaster, Barnstable Fire Department and Coast Guard responded to the harbor for a boat in distress, according to an official with the harbormaster's office.

Small boats from Coast Guard Station Cape Cod Canal, a helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod and a small boat from Coast Guard Station Menemsha responded to the call, Barresi said.

A search in the Buzzards Bay area, which is believed to be based off the same mayday call was also initiated but later called off, said Barresi. The search effort has entirely shifted to north of Barnstable Harbor, he said.

Anyone who knows someone who is overdue, missing or has information on the Michelle Marie should call the Coast Guard at 508-457-3211, Barresi said.
