(July 12, 2018) Lifelong Wauwinet summer resident Jenny Phillips learned how to swim as a young girl in the waters of Head of the Harbor.
She spent time on the island and the ocean surrounding it every summer of her life, except for the years she volunteered in the Peace Corps.
On Monday, she was out for a sail on those waters with her husband Frank and a friend when she did what she always does as the boat began to head back. She jumped into the harbor, preferring to swim home.
“We were about a quarter of the way into the bay and she was very fit for her age,” her husband said from their Concord home Wednesday. “Something happened and she never showed up.We found her body washed up on shore near where what we call the last house.”
Phillips, 76, a well-known documentary filmmaker, anthropologist, writer and psychiatric nurse, was pronounced dead on the beach by Nantucket Dr. Tim Lepore. The cause of death has not yet been determined.
