POCASSET — A 35-year-old man was brought to Rhode Island Hospital on Sunday after he stabbed himself in the chest with a knife, according to Bourne police and fire officials.

At 7:20 p.m., Bourne police responded to a home on North Road for a report of a disturbance, Bourne Police Chief Dennis Woodside said.

When police arrived they found a man in the doorway who then ran into the home, grabbed a kitchen knife and started stabbing himself in the chest, Woodside said. Police used a stun gun on the man to stop him.

A medical helicopter was requested but was not available due to the weather, so the man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in a Bourne Fire Department ambulance, Deputy Fire Chief Paul Weeks said.

Weeks said he was not on the call but said that the injuries were likely significant based on the man being brought to a trauma center.

Woodside said he believes the man is still alive.
