BARNSTABLE — A New Bedford man pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Barnstable District Court to multiple charges in connection with an armed robbery in South Yarmouth.

Michael Stande, 33, was arraigned on charges of robbery while armed with a firearm, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy and assault and battery, according to court documents.

Stande is the second person to be charged in the Jan. 12 robbery.

His wife, Kathleen Lyons, 30, also of New Bedford, pleaded not guilty Jan. 16 to charges of robbery while armed with a firearm, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery, according to court documents.

Police responded on the night of Jan. 12 to a house on Lower Brook Road in South Yarmouth, where a man told them he had just been robbed at gunpoint by a woman and three men, according to a police report. The victim told police he had arranged to meet Lyons to sell her his iPhone 7. When she arrived, he got into her car, and three men later approached the vehicle.

The victim tried to get out of the car, but Lyons grabbed his arm and yelled, "Don’t (expletive) move!" according to the report. The three men grabbed the victim’s neck and arms and Lyons allegedly pressed a handgun against his side and then against his head. The man threw his phone down and was able to escape.

New Bedford police arrested Lyons later that night and found a 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun in her purse, the report states. She has a license to carry in Massachusetts.

After obtaining a warrant to search Lyons’ phone, investigators found text messages between Lyons and Stande that showed the two had conspired to rob the man, according to a police report. The victim also saw Stande in court at one of Lyons’ hearings and recognized him from the night of the robbery, according to the report.

Yarmouth police, along with New Bedford and Massachusetts State Police officers, arrested Stande on Monday, according to a statement from the Yarmouth Police Department.
