Barnstable teens, parents, and police will convene at Tilden Arts Center Thursday, March 15, to conduct a “state of the union” of sorts – the fourth annual Community Prevention Forum.

There, a panel of Barnstable police officers will share their views on "working together to keep the community safe,"candidly discussing drug use and prevention.

The event is open to the public; free child care is available onsite.

Participating organizations -- including Barnstable Recreation, YMCA and Y Achievers Program, and Barnstable High School clubs, 20 organizations in all -- will distribute program information in the  lobby prior to the 5:30 p.m. start of the panel.

Designed for parents and the general public, the panel of police officers will assess substance abuse on Cape Cod and explore working together to keep the community safe. The officers will discuss street language, demo drug paraphernalia, and offer suggestions for maintaining a conversation with students on drug use.

In conjunction, the Barnstable Youth Commission will host the Seventh Grade Youth Summit at Tilden on Friday, March 16, presenting their views on how to keep the community safe.

Friday’s program is designed to arm students with the information that they need to resist substance abuse. The summit is sponsored by Cape Cod Healthcare, Gosnold of Cape Cod, Barnstable Recreation, and the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office.

As part of the day-long summit for seventh-graders, Gosnold Life Coach Kevin Rosario will share his own experiences and offer motivation.

A nationally certified recovery coach, Rosario is trained in interventions and family coaching. He will discuss the disease of addiction; effective ways to successfully remain in remission; and language use that reduces stigma.

In addition, Robert Hackenson, Jr., founder of Dynamic Influence, will weave making good choices into his presentation. The nationally recognized speaker says attention spans are shrinking, and if audiences are bored, the important message will be lost.

Hackenson saw a unique opportunity to infuse educational lectures and trainings with his own dynamic skills as, among other things, a magician and certified hypnotist. He will discuss the power of perception, bullying prevention, social media dangers, and vaping marketing messaging.

The Barnstable Youth Commission is an arm of the Barnstable Town Council that is charged with addressing the concerns of the youth of Barnstable. The group works closely with Barnstable Recreation Director Patti Machado and Communication/Community Services Director Lynne Poyant. For more info, visit
