Three Broadway performers will help the Cape Symphony celebrate famous songs from past decades and preview new show tunes in a “Broadway Rocks!” concert.
Past songs will include well-known tunes from “The Lion King,” “Frozen,” “Mamma Mia” and “Jersey Boys.” The new numbers are from shows premiering on Broadway later this year: “Proud Mary,” from “Tina,” a musical about rocker Tina Turner, and “Come Sail Away” and “Stairway to Heaven” from “Rocktopia,” which will pair rock songs with classical music by Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and other composers.
Vocalists will include LaKisha Jones, a top-four finalist in the 2007 season of TV’s “American Idol” and a performer in Broadway’s “The Color Purple,” who will sing “Natural Woman” from “Beautiful” and “I Will Always Love You” from “The Bodyguard”; and Anne Runolfsson, who recently completed a two-year run as diva Carlotta in Broadway’s “The Phantom of the Opera” and will sing “Good Morning Baltimore” from “Hairspray” and “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked.”
Joining them will be Rob Evan, who conceived, co-created and stars in “Rocktopia.” He will perform the two songs from that show as well as “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” from “Jersey Boys.” Evan also has had seven leading roles on the New York stage, including starring for three years in “Jekyll & Hyde.”
The three weekend performances also mark the Cape Symphony debut of guest conductor Peter Mansfield, a lifelong summer Cape resident who has for more than three decades served the Boston Pops Orchestra as arranger, orchestrator, pianist and music coordinator in Symphony Hall and on tour.
