(Dec. 6, 2018) B-ACK Yard BBQ took third place in MassLive.com’s recent Best of Mass BBQ rankings.
MassLive readers around the state submitted their nominations, which were tabulated in a voting poll. The results of the poll determined which 10 restaurants would qualify for a visit in the judging round. Then, judges Alex Parnicky and Kit Maher hit the road to give each place a try and determine the winners.
Three offerings were judged: Ribs, brisket and pulled pork. Pit masters were allowed to balance their meats with sides and bring out any showstoppers of their choice. Sides, sauces, atmosphere and presentation were taken into account, but the meat alone held the most weight in judging.
The judging criteria hinged upon the traditions of low and slow Southern-style barbecue and some factors that play into it, including types of wood, smokers and technique.
“Right off the ferry on Nantucket, the smells from BACK Yard BBQ waft through the island air. Blues music greets the ears and light shines off the water through the windows,” Maher wrote.
“The ribs were so good I wanted to miss the ferry home. Smoked beautifully thick without any bone peeking out at the ends, they had an excellent consistency with equal thickness throughout. The meat was tender and juicy, served with some fingerlicking spice. It hits you with some delicious heat at the end,” Parnicky wrote.
Beating out B-ACK yard for the top two slots were Taunton’s Kinfolks in second, and B.T.’s Smokehouse in Sturbridge in first.
